Real Food Formula News

Real Food Formula News

The benefits of using real food blends with our kids either orally or via tube cannot be denied. Abbott and Nestle have now jumped on the band wagon of real food formulas. Abbott  has developed a new formula called Pediasure Harvest and Nestle has improved Compleat Pediatric which is now Compleat Organic Blends. I have not tasted or used these products yet but will report back after I have some clinical experience with them. Both are dairy free although Harvest does contain some soy. Complete has a plant or meat based option.

I like the trend toward REAL FOOD. While I have been very pleased with the results we have gotten with Nourish, Real Food Blends, and Kate’s Farm, this hopefully, will give our families more nutritious options .

Information below is from each companies website.

Compleat ® Organic Blends:

https://www.nestlehealthscience.us/compleatorganicblends

The first and only organic, real food tube-feeding formulas that provide complete nutrition through a combination of fruits, vegetables and chicken.

2 versions: Both meet or exceed 100% Dietary Reference Intakes for protein*, as well as give you the assurance of complete nutrition through a combination of a variety of fruits, vegetables and grains, plus vitamins and minerals. The ultimate variety comes from switching things up and alternating meals, just like you do for everyone else in the family.

PLANT-BASED

Fruits and vegetables contain a variety of nutrients:*

BLUEBERRIES: Antioxidants

KALE: Fiber, vitamins A, C, K, and folate, alpha-linolenic acid, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, and zinc

PEARS: Fiber and vitamin C

SWEET POTATOES: Vitamins A, C, B6, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and pantothenic acid and manganese, copper, phosphorous, potassium, and fiber

BROWN RICE FLOUR: A gluten-free alternative to wheat

CINNAMON AND GINGER: Provide a pleasant aroma and after-taste

*Complete Organic Blends contains nutrients from fruit, vegetables, grains, peas, and added vitamins and minerals to meet the age-appropriate Daily Reference Intake (DRI) per complete feeding.

CHICKEN-GARDEN BLEND:

BEETS: B vitamins, iron, copper, magnesium, potassium

BUTTERNUT SQUASH: Vitamins E, B6, thiamin, niacin, folate, and pantothenic acid and manganese, magnesium, and potassium

MANGOS: Vitamins A and C, and fiber

SPINACH: Vitamins A, C, E, and K, and fiber

CHICKEN: Protein

BROWN RICE FLOUR: A gluten-free alternative to wheat

Can these products be given via a bottle for bottle dependent toddlers that need complete nutrition? What size nipple would have to be used? Can the product be spoon fed?

I am still getting to know these products- it looks like Harvest was designed to be an oral or bolus tube supplement while Organic Compleat says “tube feeding” on the can. In my experience, there is no reason why a tube formula could not be taken orally although it may not be designed to taste good. You could always add something to it to improve the taste. I highly recommend that you consult with your doctor or a dietitian when choosing a formula or transitioning to a new formula. I have not seen the formulas yet so I can’t advise on a cup or nipple for the formulas to flow through. Most of the blended food formulas tend to have more viscosity or thickness by nature of the ingredients. Please note, this post is for information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional who has seen your chid.

    Krisi,
This is exciting and will give even more options for families. I am going to get some samples and will let you know what I think.

I noticed in your article you stated that Compleat is the “ONLY organic, real real food tube-feeding formulas that provide complete nutrition through a combination of fruits, vegetables and chicken” is misleading. Yes, theirs includes chicken, but you also describe their plant-based version as well in this article in as much detail as you describe the version with chicken.

There is also Nourish that makes organic food for tube fed children.

Although they only offer plant based, it is an organic option that is also available and provides complete nutrition so I hope you’d consider revising your article so it more accurately portrays the options available to parents.
