I want to give a shout out to Patheous education for a great course I took this week on Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) training. Selena, Beth, Candace, and Rory were amazing trainers and made everyone feel so comfortable with scoping. By the end of the class, everyone was scoping like pros!
If you are interested in learning about FEES or want to get some hands on practice, I would highly recommend this class.
Application for me: Even if you are a pediatric therapist like me, scope learning and practice will happen on adults first before applying the procedure to children. In our practice (at UNC), we are offering both procedures. Most often, our littles have had a MBSS (modified barium swallowing study) first and we use FEES as a second assessment of swallowing or to assess specific types of swallowing concerns. We offer FEES in our out-patient pediatric dysphagia clinic with ENT or as a speech procedure. While both tests are stand alone tests, it’s important to have both options to give us a full picture of swallowing and to direct treatment.
